John Barsby Secondary School evacuated after ‘unspecified threat’

NANAIMO — A local high school has been evacuated following what Nanaimo RCMP described as an unspecified threat.

Police say the threat made to John Barsby Secondary School was made on Wednesday, Oct. 4 after 3 p.m. at a time when students were already leaving for the day.

School staff along with RCMP quickly cleared the building as a result, while specialized officers, including Police Dog Services, were assigned to investigate.

Searches of the interior and exterior of the building were conducted.

Police say the school will remain closed until it is deemed safe to enter.

Following a clearing of the building, an investigation into the source of the threat will continue.
