Nanaimo’s well used tree voucher program returns

NANAIMO — Thousands of new trees on private lots around Nanaimo have been planted since the adoption of a popular program.

The City of Nanaimo’s annual tree voucher program launched last week, which allows property owners to apply for up to two trees for a discounted price of $25 each.

Applications for the tree voucher program are welcomed through the City’s eApply portal.

More informations is available here.

Deciduous, evergreen, coniferous, fruit and nut trees are covered in the program in partnership with Green Thumb Garden Centre on Hammond Bay Rd.

Eligible trees must not exceed $90 in value, which must achieve a diameter of at least centimeters in diameter and at least 4.5 meters in height.

Historically, between 1,300 and 1,500 vouchers are claimed annually through the eight-year-old program, aimed at bolstering the City’s tree canopy.

“The initiative supports the City’s commitment to enhancing biodiversity, expanding Nanaimo’s urban forest and promoting environmentally friendly landscaping on private property,” a City news release stated.

Applications for the tree voucher program are welcomed through the City’s eApply portal.
