Beach Backtrack Week of October 30th

Monday, October 30th: The Rembrandts – I’ll Be There For You

This tune was released in 1994 as the theme song for Friends. This was a no-brainer to play today after learning of Friends star, Matthew Perry’s death. He was found unresponsive in a hot tub Saturday, October 28th. RIP to our friend, Chandler Bing.

Tuesday, October 31st: Bobby ‘Boris’ Pickett – Monster Mash

A Halloween must! Have a listen to this interview Megan was able to do with the cast of the Monster Mash.

Wednesday, November 1st: Sophie B. Hawkins – As I Lay Me Down

Happy 59th to Sophie! This single was off her 2nd album, Whaler, in 1994. She had written this in memory of her father.

Thursday, November 2nd: Fats Domino – Blueberry Hill

On Nov. 2nd, 1956, Fats Domino was performing in North Carolina when a riot broke out! Police used tear gas to try and break it up. Fats and two band mates jumped out of a window to escape. The fall resulted in minor injuries for all three, but overall they were okay.

Friday, November 3rd: The Crystals – He’s a Rebel

This song was made in a pretty snakey way! Written in 1962 for the Shirelles who declined the song. So then it went to singer Vikki Carr. Producer Phil Spector heard the song and wanted to release his own version first. Here’s the snakiest part of it, he had the Blossoms record it… as the Crystals! The Crystals had NO idea about this until they heard it on the radio one day, announced as “the Crystals new song”. Mary Thomas of the Crystals said their mouths fell open when they heard that.
And then, because their name was on it – they had to PERFORM it at shows! The lead singer, Barbara Alston couldn’t hit the notes of that in the single, so then the lead went to Dolores Lala Brooks.
