The Beach Riff Wrap

Parksville, BC, Canada / 88.5 The Beach
The Beach Riff Wrap

Rifflandia, Victoria, BC, September 15 – 17, 2023. It was SO fun! The lineup was diverse and touched on something for everybody. The night one headliner was Iggy Pop. Whoever thought they’d be watching this legend at an outdoor festival? He did not hold back in his performance and at 76 years old, still writhed on the floor as you’d hope!

Day two at Rifflandia brought more fun. Preston Pablo took the stage and despite some technical difficulties, he persevered. Once it got sorted out he shook it off and blew up that stage! He performed a new single, Believe, that was released just day, Saturday September 16th.

The big headliner was Salt-N-Pepa! A 45 minute set that took us through their 40 year catalogue and the history of rap with DJ Shadow Red. It opened up with “None of Your Business”, weaved through with nods to rock & roll and a history of hip hop. Their dancers were on point and delivered the hype.

Day 3 at Rifflandia brought Melanie C… yes, Sporty Spice! She thrilled the crowd with a DJ set that included some Spice Girls tunes. As soon as her set started, the audience flocked to the mainstage.

Rifflandia also included Lafflandia, a comedy hut featuring comedians such as Brandon Ash Mohammed (Last One Laughing Canada), Ryan Williams, Courtney Gilmour, and others.

Lovelandia was also a big hit! Where couples can wed in the middle of the festival. And they did! I watched a couple get married “last minute”. The groom had actually planned to propose to his partner and had the ring. He had said “Why don’t we get married right now?” Then gave her the ring. She was in tears! Happy tears, of course. It was a beautiful thing to have the privilege to witness.

Rifflandia is a community festival. Meaning, when you’re there, you’re part of a welcoming and happy community. They strive to make this festival all-inclusive and I believe they succeeded.
