NANAIMO — Police say alcohol was a factor in a single vehicle crash in north Nanaimo where a car flipped in a subdivision.
Nanaimo RCMP took the driver of a white Hyundai sedan into custody after the car rolled on Ambience Dr. near Laguna Way around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 3.
Both the driver and a female passenger were able to escape on their own and did not require medical attention.
Nanaimo Res. RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said the driver failed a roadside screening test and handed a 90 day driving prohibition.
“What’s troubling is this occurring at 10:30 in the morning where alcohol is a contributing factor, that’s a real issue,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.
The totalled car was eventually towed from the scene.
O’Brien said the motorist was travelling at a high rate of speed, according to multiple on-scene witnesses.
“It was making a right turn, because of the speed couldn’t negotiate the corner, hit the curb and flipped.”
The car landed on its roof as it was pinned between a retaining wall and an excavator.
Witnesses told NanaimoNewsNOW the motorist was travelling extremely fast while entering and attempting to leave the subdivision.
A concerned local resident said the car was drifting side-to-side on the street and travelling on the sidewalk just seconds prior to the crash.
The resident said excessive speeding from people not residing in the area has been a longstanding issue.
A vehicle driven by a man who was later arrested by police, flipped and ran next to an excavator along Ambience Way Tuesday morning. (Ian Holmes/NanaimoNewsNOW)Local news. Delivered. Free. Subscribe to our daily news wrap and get our top local stories delivered to your email inbox every evening
